While i do love ALL of the kel memes, i also think that kels trauma is ignored by fans. Kel most likely looked up to mari in the same way he looked up to hero, so losing her would be like losing a sister to some extent. And the fact that he cared more about helping his friends than himself tells me that maybe being there for hero was a way to distract himself from his own feelings

Kel and Basil weirdly compliment eachother as far as their relationships to Sunny goes. They compliment him in opposite but fitting ways. Omocat has stated that Kel "was made for Sunny" while Basil is visibly queer-coded and is implied to have had a childhood crushon Sunny (turned obsessive/toxic by trauma). Something that Kel has over everyone else in the friend group (including Basil) is that he was the only one who got Sunny to leave his house. He literally and metaphorically saved Sunny's life. The Hikikomori implies that Basil tried multiple times to reach out to Sunny but he eventually gave up. (Otherwise he would have known about the For Sale sign.) Kel is stated to have regularly called and knocked on Sunny's door for almost 4 years. The surprise and relief when Sunny actually answers is very telling of how vulnerable Kel was being, risking rejection to spend time with his best friend. Basil and Kel are both able to get Sunny out of his comfort zone but at different paces. Sunny generally prefers when others take the lead. Kel is able to get Sunny outside exploring Faraway Town in a matter of hours/days. Basil is more subtle, introducing Sunny to new books and interests but it takes a while for him to reciprocate. Kel and Basil are both protective in different ways. Basil protects Sunny by being his fall-guy/secret keeper. Kel protects him physically even if it means running into danger, like taking away the knife or distracting/taking hits for Sunny in the Aubrey and Hooligan fights. While Basil and Sunny are implied to have had a close friendship before the incident, and Basil is coded as having a puppy crush, Basil and Sunny are now trauma triggers for eachother. The second half of BlackSpace is Sunny/Omori brutally killing Basil in an attempt to supress the Truth. These are Sunny's raw, messy, unfiltered thoughts. It is not unreasonable to infer that Sunny has some degree of unprocessed anger/mixed feelings towards Basil for hanging Mari and, in hindsight, making the incident even worse. Kel has no direct ties to the Incident beyond Sunny's guilt over abandoning and lying to him. Sunny needed a close and persistant friend that wasn't tied to the incident to actually take the first steps towards healing. Basil/Stranger is Sunny's guide in Headspace to confronting the truth, Kel is Sunny's guide in the physical world to reconnecting with reality and his old friends.

SunFlower has the highest fanfic count on AO3 (in ships between Sunny, Kel, Aubrey, and Basil) at almost 1,696 entries. For comparison, Sunburn comes in close at 1,668 fics, and Suntan at 1,017 fics at the time of posting this. Kelbry has 446 fics, Cactiflower at 306, and Photobomb at 246. Overall, the Kel-based ships have the lowest individual counts, with the exception of Photobomb in dead last. Yes, even in ship fic ratios, Kel is all but dead last in both quality and quanity Basil/Sunflower gets shit-talked in comment threads and forum posts, but its the most popular ship as far as fanfictions go. Kel is adored as a meme character, but his ships veer into rarepair terrritory and the quality of Kel ship fanfics vary. Suntan is the exception, but its overshadowed by Sunflower at almost 70% more fanfic content. Your Kel video essay has a 1:6 view ratio to your Basil essay and a 1:4 ratio with your Sunny essay. Which is a shame bcs Kel has a lot of goofy charm and interesting chemistry with each character. He's not a source of horror or strife like Basil and Aubrey, but he has a complicated family dynamic where he is overlooked and unappreciated. You might find Suntan and other Kel ships boring, but he deserves some love and appreciation too. Also as someone with the personality of a wet cat, I adore ships that have skittish rabbit or black cat/golden retriever vibes. Being with someone as passive and anxious as myself would drive me up a wall. I've always preferred dynamics that take charge and push me out of my comfort zone while still being respectful. He's an ecourager and also someone in need of serious encouraging

Who tf is saying that Kel wasn't "as close" to Mari? Mari is shown to have been a close older sister figure to everyone (sans Hero) in the group, including Kel. They were a found/secondary family of childhood friends, his big brother dated her when they reached high school! He spent every chance he could with Sunny and Mari, he thinks about her almost every day even 4 years later! In the dream world, Sunny remembers their bond as that of a cool big sis teasing/encouraging her lil brother ("Yo Kel, whats up? You keep growing and you'll be taller than Hero one day!"). The strange informality to her dialogue is a big clue to the kind of bond they had.

I’m not sure how I headcanoned Basil immediately after I played the game, but just seeing the title I thought “you know that actually makes sense”

Being mentally ill I relate HARD to fictional characters that are shown to have mental illnesses; and the reason why I love the Hurt/Comfort genre paired with those character is definitely because I want to see people go through similar stuff I went through and still end up *happy* . It’s like desperately trying to manifest positivity while comforting yourself and helping yourself believe that you deserve it too. And Sunflower helped me a lot with that :)

This kinda reminds me of a lot of the opinion pieces I saw about Onimai back in the day. To this day I still dont know if i have the guts to watch Onimai lmao, but if i remember it correctly, the teenage horniness is probably where they line up.

I’m a HARD sunflower shipper but when I saw the suntan ship….I mean it could have been a bit higher like I personally don’t ship it bc I see kel as aroace but I would put it in the meh section bc the dynamic and I do see your reasoning and I kinda agree with your opinions (but honestly the suicide duo is always my fav)

Personally I always interpreted Sunny’s crush on Aubrey in a more aro/ace/gay way. Headspace is almost entirely up to Sunny, so the status quo *could’ve* been Aubrey and Omori with a mutual crush or relationship, just like Hero and Mari. This kind of seemed like it was more of a closeted confused kid’s “the queerplatonic desire to be someone’s special favorite person” than an actual crush, especially since, iirc, Aubrey doesn’t really express any romantic interest in Omori until after Basil, Sunny’s best friend, goes missing. Combined with the fact that (at least in the sunny route) the only time he shows any kind of reciprocal interest (in Aubrey’s final “look at Omori” follow-up) correlates almost exactly with when the group starts to forget Basil, it seemed more like Sunny wanting a “relationship” with his closest female friend to distract from his female friend, but he’s so deep in the Gaysil that he can’t imagine liking Aubrey back.

Imagine sunflower but, they just can't be entirely happy until that moment where they both get therapy together. (Or Sunny just moves in with Basil instead of moving away, I guess? IDK I might be weird and stuff because I kind of just create stories in my head when I'm trying to sleep so I can visualize it, and that specific one where Sunny just moves into Basil's house and becomes his roommate instead *_fighting to the death with Basil_* is just so "🤩" for me, and I don't know why I think this would happen!
